How to read this table: Indeed displays typical weekly pay for its “Truck Driver” category; our annualized equivalent is weekly pay × 52, assuming 52 paid weeks. Salary.com figures are October 1, 2026 estimates for the “CDL Truck Driver” title. BLS figures are May 2025 median annual wages for Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers (53-3032). They are not identical occupations or sampling methods. Owner-operators who are self-employed are not included in BLS employee wage estimates. Particularly small or outdated Indeed samples (such as Alaska and Hawaii) can be unreliable. Sources and calculation details follow below.

Understanding the numbers

Why Do Indeed, Salary.com and BLS Report Different Truck Driver Salaries?

Each website measures a different labor market and uses different inputs. A trucking job posting with high mileage-based pay is not directly comparable to a government estimate of typical employee wages.

Indeed: Job-posting-based pay estimates

Indeed's Truck Driver salary pages use compensation data from job postings on its platform over the previous 36 months. Indeed typically reports weekly pay. We multiply the displayed weekly amount by 52 to show an annualized equivalent, not an observed yearly wage or a guarantee of 52 paid weeks.

Salary.com: Role-specific salary estimates

Salary.com estimates annual pay for its “CDL Truck Driver” job title from employer job postings and third-party salary sources. These are model-based estimates and depend on the platform's job definition and data inputs. We use its October 1, 2026 state figures.

BLS: Survey-based median employee wage

The Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys employers and estimates wages for Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers (SOC 53-3032). We use each state's median, the midpoint where half of covered workers earn more and half earn less, from May 2025 OEWS.

Does BLS include part-time truck drivers and owner-operators?

Part-time workers: Yes. BLS's OEWS survey includes both full-time and part-time wage-and-salary employees. However, its published annual wages generally assume a standard full-time year of 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). That means the annual figure is not the actual calendar-year income of an individual part-time driver.

Self-employed owner-operators: No. OEWS excludes self-employed workers, including independent owner-operators. Salaried employees of incorporated businesses can be within coverage. Owner-operator gross business revenue also includes expenses and should not be compared directly with employee wages.

What Changes Truck Driver Pay?

Location is only one factor. Local delivery, regional trucking, long-haul/over-the-road (OTR) work, night schedules, specialized freight, experience, endorsements and overtime can all change earnings. Many carriers also use per-mile or performance-based compensation.

Pay estimates also don't show the same details about take-home pay, insurance, home time, time waiting for loads or deductions. Compare written offers based on the actual schedule, guaranteed pay, expected paid miles or hours, and benefits.

Truck Driver Salary by State: Frequently Asked Questions

How much do truck drivers make per year?

The May 2025 BLS national median annual wage for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers was $58,640. Indeed and Salary.com publish different estimates because they measure different job categories and data sources. State figures are listed above.

Why is Indeed's truck driver salary higher than BLS?

Indeed reports estimates derived from job postings and usually shows weekly pay for a broad Truck Driver category. We multiply that weekly amount by 52, which assumes a full 52 paid weeks and may overstate annual earnings for a driver with unpaid downtime. BLS reports surveyed employee wages, excluding self-employed owner-operators, under its own occupational classification.

Does the BLS truck driver salary include part-time drivers?

Yes. The OEWS employee survey includes part-time workers. But its annualized wage estimates generally assume 2,080 hours a year, so the annual number is not the actual yearly pay received by someone working part-time.

Does BLS count owner-operators?

Not if they're self-employed. OEWS does not survey independent owner-operators as wage-and-salary employees. Business revenue for owner-operators isn't equivalent to take-home salary because equipment, fuel, insurance, maintenance and other expenses must be deducted.

Does having a Class A CDL increase your salary?

Class A licenses allow qualifying drivers to operate combination vehicles and may expand job options. Earnings still depend on the employer, actual routes, experience and vehicle type. The table above shouldn't be interpreted as a guarantee of pay for new graduates.

How often are these truck driver salary figures updated?

Indeed updates its state estimates periodically, Salary.com publishes new salary snapshots, and BLS releases annual occupational wage estimates. This page uses Indeed state pages available in October 2026, Salary.com as of October 1, 2026, and BLS May 2025 occupational estimates. We recommend revisiting the original source links before making a career decision.
