Truck Drivers In Florida
If you are looking for a career path with steady demand, strong statewide employment and ongoing job openings, CDL training in Florida makes a lot of sense as a next step.
Truck driving continues to be a major occupation in Florida, with about 226,000 drivers employed statewide and average annual wages around $81,000 for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, depending on specialization and experience.
Florida is also projected to be one of the highest-growth states for commercial transportation, with approximately 13,400 new truck driver job openings expected every year on average as the Sunshine State’s freight corridor expands and experienced drivers retire.
In fact, across the various major job boards there are consistently around 4,500 – 7,500 CDL jobs available in Florida. Specifically, the Employ Florida statewide portal and regional career sites actively list thousands of open opportunities for licensed commercial drivers.

Florida CDL Requirements
- Have a valid FL driver’s license (Class D)
- Be at least 18 years old (21 for out of state)
- Be healthy enough to pass a DOT Physical
- Be a USA citizen or have residential immigrant status (Green Card)
- Enroll in a FMSCA listed CDL school like Driving Academy
FAQ: Getting A Florida CDL License
The total cost depends on FLHSMV fees, your DOT physical, and CDL school tuition. Florida charges a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and testing fees, plus the CDL license issuance fee (around $75), along with small endorsement fees if you add any. On top of that, most people need to pay a local medical examiner to get their DOT physical.
In Florida, the fastest you can technically get a CDL is 14 days. This is because the FMCSA requires a mandatory 14-day waiting period after you get your commercial learner's permit (CLP) before you can take the skills road test.
Of course, you will also need to complete your ELDT training at an approved CDL school like Driving Academy. We can help local residents complete their training in as little as a few weeks. However, this only works if you book appointments early and train full-time.
You generally need a valid Florida Class D driver's license, the required identity and residency documents for the FLHSMV, and to complete these CDL steps in order:
- Pass the DOT Physical to get your medical card
- Pass the CDL written knowledge tests at a local FLHSMV or tax collector office
- Receive your FLorida Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).
- Complete ELDT training at an FMCSA-approved CDL school in FL
- Theory training
- Behind-the-Wheel training
- Pass the skills test
It doesn't have to be hard if you train the right way, but many people fail because they under-practice the pre-trip inspection and backing maneuvers, not because they can't drive a large vehicle.
That's why Driving Academy offers Guaranteed CDL Training programs so there's no fear of failure. With these courses offered by our Florida CDL schools, you get to take the CDL road test as many times as it takes to pass.
No. Failing usually means you need more targeted practice and then you can retest. This is why many students prefer our guaranteed package that provides unlimited road test retakes.
Class A opens the most doors because it covers combination vehicles (tractor + trailer). Class B can still be a strong choice for straight trucks and certain local roles, but it’s more limited. If you’re switching careers and want the widest hiring market, Class A is usually the safer pick.
Yes, if you choose a program with a schedule built for working adults. Many students need weekend and evening classes so they can train without quitting their current job.
