What Is a Class B+P CDL?
Class B commercial licenses cover operating a single vehicle that weighs more than 26,000 pounds and is usually not hitched to trailers. These vehicles have an attached cab and cargo area but can have a detached trailer that weighs less than 10,000 pounds. Examples of vehicles in the Class B category include straight trucks, buses, box trucks, and dump trucks with small trailers.
Even with a Class B CDL, a person is not automatically qualified to operate heavy passenger vehicles. To do so requires a special endorsement. A Class P endorsement on a CDL allows the driver to operate a vehicle that can carry more than 16 people, including the driver. This endorsement is needed to drive buses or other large passenger vehicles. To get a Class P endorsement, you must receive a passing grade on a written knowledge test and a road skills test.
Having a Class B CDL with a passenger endorsement qualifies a driver to pursue the following jobs:
- School bus driver: You are responsible for transporting students safely to and from school and other activities while maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the bus.
- Commercial tour bus driver: You drive passengers along a route to tourist attractions while a tour guide provides information about the area and attractions.
- City bus driver: You transport passengers on a regular schedule along a designated route in a city or suburb.
- Shuttle service driver: You provide safe transportation for passengers along a specific, predetermined route.

How Do You Earn a Class B+P CDL?
Earn a Class B+P CDL to operate large passenger vehicles with the following steps:
ENROLL
To earn any CDL classification, you need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license (not probationary). Aspiring professional drivers must also be able to pass a Department of Transportation physical. Additional information on CDL prerequisites can be found on the New Jersey State Commercial Driver License website or the state’s website where you plan to earn your CDL.

PERMIT
Students will need a permit to train on the road. At Driving Academy, our full courses begin with classroom training to help students pass the written exams, which will earn them a valid CDL permit. We then bring students to the yard and train them to pass the CDL road test. Students at Driving Academy have the benefit of practice permit tests to prepare them for first-time success.
