What Is a CDL?
A CDL stands for a commercial driver’s license, which is required to drive a commercial motor vehicle like a tractor-trailer, tank truck, or passenger vehicle. These drivers need to have special training to ensure they can operate these vehicles correctly and safely. If you’re looking to become a commercial truck driver, you first need to get your CDL license. To do so, you must meet a few requirements:
- Be 18 years of age or older (if working outside of your home state, you must be 21 or older)
- Be a U.S. citizen or have lawful permanent resident status
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical
- Complete Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider on FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry, like Driving Academy
- Passthe written CDL permit test
- Pass the CDL road skills test, a two-and-a-half-hour test with sections on inspection, parking skills, and road driving

About Our Full CDL Course
There are different types of CDL licenses, and you’ll have to decide which one you want to pursue before starting a course. The CDL licenses we train and test for at Driving Academy are:
Pick the type of CDL you would like
CDL Class A: This license allows a driver to operate vehicles weighing more than 26,001 pounds with a trailer weighing more than 10,000 pounds, like tractor-trailers or flatbeds.
CDL Class B: This license lets drivers drive any vehicle heavier than 26,001 pounds with no trailer or one less than 10,000 pounds, like dump trucks, box trucks, and garbage trucks.
A CDL Class B+ P: This license is required for driving passenger buses or other vehicles carrying more than 16 passengers and weighing more than 26,000 pounds.
Once deciding on the CDL you wish to pursue, you can determine the most suitable training program for your needs. Our full CDL courses are designed for students without any prior CDL experience. This is different from our half courses, which are for people who already have their CDL permit. Students begin with state-approved classroom training designed to help them pass the written permit exam and continue with hands-on, behind-the-wheel training in the yard to practice techniques for the road test.
Once completing the full CDL course, students are prepared to pass their road test, offered at our third-party testing site. This lets students skip the DMV, use familiar trucks, and be tested by known team members to increase their comfort and chances of passing.
