CDL For Veterans FAQ

Yes, you can use your GI Bill benefits to get a CDL license by enrolling in a VA-approved truck driving school. These benefits can cover tuition, fees,  supplies and even provide a monthly housing allowance while you train.

Nope. To qualify, you must attend a truck driving school that’s approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Yes! Veterans make excellent commercial drivers because of their discipline, work ethic, and ability to follow regulations. With high demand and great pay, getting your veteran CDL license is one of the best ways to transition into civilian life without needing years of schooling.

With a VA approved truck driving school like Driving Academy, our veteran CDL programs are covered by the GI Bill so it's no cost to you.

Depending on the type of vehicle you were operating in the military you might be eligible for a waiver to get a CDL without taking the skills (road) test.

You need to be a service member with an active driver's license and have operated military vehicles similar to commercial motor vehicles within the past 12 months to use the CDL skills test waiver form.  If you drove a tractor trailer as part of your role in the armed forces you could get a waiver, but not if you drove a tank or Humvee.

This military commercial driver license waiver is available in every state.

However, you still need to pass the DOT physical and take the written CDL  knowledge tests.

You will also need to get a CDL license through your nearby DMV using the military road test waiver.
